You might not always realise it, but we spend on average one third of our lives in bed. This means 3000 hours in just one year! Your night's rest can be categorised in three phases: relaxing, falling asleep and sleeping.
Relaxing
Sleep is promoted when your mind comes to rest before you go to sleep. Going to bed immediately after a sporting activity is not recommended; neither is working until midnight and then immediately going to sleep.
It is not easy to pin point the transition between being awake and being asleep. It seems to be more of a gradual process than a sudden transition. We slowly become less aware of our surroundings.
Sleep is a state of physical rest and reduced awareness. It is generally assumed that the main function of sleep is to allow the body and the brain to recover.
